The inspiration for the project stemmed from console video games, specifically racing simulation games, and the team's passion for engineering. The significant advancements in real-time imagery over the past years motivated the team to simulate the same within browsers, leveraging their decade-long study of WebGL and OpenGL.
Car Visualizer Classics stands out for its unique interactive features. Users can explore the vehicles from all angles, in real time, on any modern browser and device. The platform also offers the option to switch between vehicles and change the paint color. The environment is designed to focus on the vehicle while giving a sense of infinite space. The experience is further enhanced with retro electronic music, exclusively designed for the project.
The project was realized using WebGL technology and developed entirely using JavaScript and GLSL. The 3D models of the environment and vehicles were created in a 3D modeling software and optimized for the desired realistic result. The project also implements Physically Based Rendering (PBR) patterns.
The Car Visualizer Classics was designed with user-friendliness in mind. A simple graphical user interface allows users to control the 3D world, replace vehicles, change paint color, toggle camera mode, control audio, among other functionalities. The project, which began in October 2013 and completed in February 2014, received a technology and visual update in January 2017.
The main challenge faced by the team was to create the most realistic visual results and reach as many devices as possible. They overcame issues related to assets load, size, and memory consumption across a variety of devices by simplifying user options and keeping memory consumption low.
The Car Visualizer Classics project is a testament to the team's innovative approach, blending two different areas: the video game and the Web industries, to improve online product advertising and user feedback. This unique platform was awarded the Silver in A' Website and Web Design Awards in 2017, a recognition given to designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
